Conquering the Rain: Wet Weather Training Tips for Total Warriors

If you’re signed up for Total Warrior, you already know it’s not your average run. Mud, water, and unpredictable conditions are all part of the challenge. That means training in the rain isn’t just inevitable – it’s essential. Embracing wet weather runs will prepare your body (and your mindset) for race day. Here’s how to make the most of it.

1. Dress Smart, Not Heavy

When the rain pours, it’s tempting to layer up. But too many clothes get heavy when soaked. Stick to lightweight, moisture-wicking gear that won’t cling or chafe. Avoid cotton – once wet, it will stay wet. A light waterproof jacket can help on colder days, but keep it breathable.

Pro tip: A peaked cap or visor is a game changer. It keeps the rain out of your eyes and helps you stay focused on your footing.

2. Look After Your Feet

Your feet will take the brunt of wet training. Choose trail shoes with good grip to handle slippery ground. Consider wearing thin, synthetic socks that dry quickly and reduce the risk of blisters.

Bonus hack: Apply Vaseline or a sports anti-chafe balm to your feet before setting off – it creates a barrier against moisture and friction.

3. Embrace the Conditions

Total Warrior is designed to be messy. Think of rain as your training partner, not the enemy. Running through puddles, tackling muddy trails, and staying steady on slippery ground will give you real race-day confidence.

Mental shift: Tell yourself – if I can do this in the rain, I can do it anywhere.

4. Prioritise Safety

Wet weather brings hazards: slick pavements, hidden potholes, and reduced visibility. Shorten your stride and focus on control rather than speed. If you’re running on roads, make sure you wear something reflective so drivers can see you through the spray.

5. Post-Run Care is Just as Important

As soon as you finish, change out of wet clothes to avoid chills. Stuff your shoes with newspaper – it draws out moisture and helps them dry quicker. Don’t forget to stretch and refuel: cold, wet runs take more out of your body than you think.

Final Word

Total Warrior is all about resilience. Training in the rain doesn’t just strengthen your muscles – it builds grit, adaptability, and the mental toughness you’ll need on the course. Next time the skies open up, don’t hide inside. Pull on your gear, step out, and remind yourself: Warriors run through storms, not away from them.
